Maintaining cleanliness in HDB estates still a challenge

SINGAPORE : Maintaining cleanliness in HDB estates is still a challenge and chairman of Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council, Dr Ahmad Magad, said this is partly due to the high attrition rate among local cleaning workers due to the low pay.

The town put in place a Local Worker's Incentive Scheme in 2008 to retain workers.

Thirty-two local workers received their incentive awards from Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean on Sunday.

Dr Ahmad said the incentives of S$200 are given out every six months to those who perform well, so as to send the message that their services are valued.

He also announced that 32 blocks in Pasir Ris have been selected for lift upgrading, and residents can also look forward to new amenities under the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme.

But residents too must do their part to keep the town clean.

Dr Ahmad, who is also an MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, said: "There are certain habits, such as putting things along the common corridor and all that, which take a little bit of time for us to work on them to get them to understand to clear the clutter and clog."
