MANILA, Philippines – The death toll from a bus bombing in the Philippine capital has risen to five with 13 wounded as authorities suspect terrorists are to blame and step up security.
Metropolitan Manila police director Nicanor Bartolome said Wednesday investigators recovered parts of a remotely detonated improvised bomb that resembles similar devices used by Muslim militants in bombings in the volatile southern Philippines.
President Benigno Aquino III tried to calm residents in a televised news conference shortly after Tuesday's blast, promising his government will not allow fear to settle in.
He and other officials have not named any specific group but suggested the possible involvement of al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf militants. They bombed a bus in Manila in 2005, killing four.
