Donaire: Speed, power to dethrone Montiel from title

Source: PDI

MANILA, Philippines -- Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire has ended his sparring and vowed to use
his speed and power to the hilt in trying to dethrone WBC-WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel of Mexico at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Donaire sparred five rounds with undefeated featherweight Randy Caballero (7-0, 4 KOs), a promising fighter who approximates the style of Montiel. Donaire said later he was ready for the Mexican.

The reigning WBC Continental Americas bantamweight champion, who won the crown with a masterful four-round demolition of former world champion Wladimir Sidorenko, hopes to duplicate that performance against the more experienced Montiel.

Montiel arrived on Sunday in Las Vegas where he would wind down preparations for his clash with Donaire, who also did some running, including sprints at the University of Nevada Las Vegas track, to remain sharp.

Donaire also received best wishes from pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, who had a successful press conference in Las Vegas before leaving for New York, where he plans to celebrate Valentine’s Day with wife Jinkee.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said there was “a lot of interest in the Donaire-Montiel fight all over, not just in the Philippines and Mexico.”
