SINGAPORE: Labour Chief Lim Swee Say said he is happy that the government has responded well to the needs of low-wage workers under the Workfare Income Supplement (WIS) Scheme.
Mr Lim said the workers would benefit from the cash component in the Singapore Budget unveiled on Friday by Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
Speaking on the sidelines of a community event, Mr Lim said the payouts will put the scheme in a better position to take care of workers' needs.
About 400,000 low-wage workers who stay employed will benefit.
"They will now have a greater cash component and at the same time, we still maintain our support in strengthening their CPF savings," Mr Lim said.
"So I would say the scheme today has been improved further and it provides a good balance."
Workfare recipients will get a special bonus of 50 per cent more for work done last year, and 25 per cent more for work done this and next year.
It will be paid out fully in cash, with the first tranche on May 15.
Self-employed persons who make their Medisave contributions will also benefit.
They will receive half of their bonus in cash and the other half in their CPF Medisave accounts.
