Philippines: No apology for deporting 14 Taiwanese

Source: AP

The president says the Philippines does not need to apologize to Taiwan for deporting 14 Taiwanese nationals to China but is concerned about 90,000 Filipino workers there.

Benigno Aquino III said Wednesday the Philippines was sending a message that his country is not a safe haven for criminals. The 14 deportees were accused of defrauding Chinese citizens in an investment scam.

Taiwan has demanded an apology since the deportations earlier this month.

Aquino says the labor department has been directed to retrain workers so they can be hired in other countries if Taiwan freezes the hiring of Filipinos.

Presidential spokesman Ricky Carandang says Manila will make greater efforts to share information in future deportation cases involving third governments.
