Quake shakes buildings in Philippine capital

Source: AFP

An off-shore earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 shook buildings in the Philippine capital on Tuesday, seismologists said, although there was no damage and no tsunami warning.

The epicentre struck in the ocean 66 kilometres (41 miles) southwest of Manila, at a depth of 137 kilometres, the US Geological Survey reported.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), which uses a different formula from the USGS, placed the magnitude at 4.1 and reported no damage.

"While this was moderately strong, the depth was quite deep," Phivolcs director Renato Solidum told ANC television.

"It had to travel more than 100 kilometres upwards and, when it reached ground, the energy was not that strong."
