President Benigno Aquino III has thumbed down suggestions that the government employ an iron hand to speed up the country’s economic development.
Addressing the Presidential Security Group on the occasion of its 25th anniversary on Tuesday, Mr. Aquino said there were threats to his safety and to the country's security but added he intended to address these with good governance.
“We don't want a repeat of the dark episodes of our history, wherein skewed logic was the trend. Others have argued that the country would achieve progress under a government with an iron hand,” President Aquino said in his speech.
As your leader, I refuse to be swayed,” he added.
Mr. Aquino said nobody wants confusion and violence to prevail other than those who took advantage of a previous system in which many Filipinos suffered.
“That is why our commitment is good governance towards a democracy that will be beneficial to all,” the President said.
