MANILA, Philippines—Reigning WBO flyweight champion Julio Cesar Miranda is currently the target of a Filipino fighter, whose manager is confident he can seal a matchup for his ward.
Former two-time world light flyweight champion Brian Viloria should be next in line for Miranda in a mandatory title fight, said Gary Gittelsohn, the Filipino-American’s manager.
But Internet reports said Miranda, who won the vacant title with a 5th-round TKO over Richie Mepranum on June 12, 2010, in Mexico, has been slated for a rematch with the Filipino on April 30.
Gittelsohn told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that Miranda would have to defend his title against Viloria who, being ranked No. 1, stood as the mandatory challenger.
He said he had “reached out to Fernando Beltran, the promoter of Miranda, to see if we could work out a date and a site and reasonable terms for the fight.”
He added that should they fail to come to terms, “then our only option is to go to a purse bid.”
