'Hidden extras' sour web bookings

Source: Press Assoc

More people are booking holidays online but some find there are "hidden extras" when they come to pay, according to a survey.

As many as 56% of those booking a package holiday in the last 12 months did so through the internet, the poll by research firm ConsumerIntelligence.com found.
But 38% of those booking online found that when they called to confirm their booking there were hidden extras added to the cost they had been quoted.
The 56% online booking figure compared with 20% who had booked a package at a travel agent's office.
The package holiday website that most people had heard of was Lastminute.com, with 92.5% aware of the site.
The next-most familiar was Thomascook.com followed by Thomson.co.uk.
ConsumerIntelligence.com managing director Ian Hughes said: "The way people book holidays has changed beyond recognition over the past decade or two, and it's important that holiday websites offer the same positive customer experience that they would get face to face.
"Our research shows that the majority of these websites are doing a good job, with great customer approval ratings. However, some sites need to be careful not to annoy their customers by adding hidden costs, as this is a big source of irritation for many customers."
A total of 2,439 people were surveyed.
