MANILA, Philippines—A grateful Japan received the Philippines’ donation of more than 10 metric tons of relief goods with a vow to rebuild itself after the devastation wrought by a powerful earthquake and tsunami, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Yutaka Banno thanked the Philippine government for the “warm messages of sympathy and for the shipment of the relief items that are needed in the affected areas in Japan,” the DFA said.

Banno met in Tokyo on Friday with Ambassador Manuel Lopez, who informed him of the shipment of 10.11 metric tons of relief supplies worth almost P1 million that arrived in Japan on the same day.

Banno said that Japan “is determined to rebuild itself after this crisis,” according to the DFA statement.

The relief supplies consist of noodles and food packs, towels, dust masks and mats, based on the needs identified and requested by Japan.

Home to 300,000 Filipinos

Lopez reiterated to Banno the profound condolences of the Filipino people to the Japanese government and people as they cope with the twin disasters.

He cited the long-standing ties between the Philippines and Japan, which is home to about 300,000 Filipinos. About 4,600 of them were living in the four prefectures (provinces) hit hardest by the calamity.

Banno extended his sympathies to the Philippines upon learning that two Filipinos had died in the disaster. He said Japan was prepared to support Philippine embassy efforts in assisting Filipinos in the affected areas.

Lopez said the Philippines was ready to extend any assistance to Japan “within its capability,” including sending a humanitarian team to Japan “should its services be requested,” the DFA said.
