MANILA---B-MEG Derby Ace exploited Marcus Douthit’s injury and snapped the unbeaten run of Smart Gilas Pilipinas with a 98-90 overtime win last night in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Shamari Spears scored 26 points and PJ Simon added 20, including five straight points in extra time as the short-handed Llamados claimed the honor of conquering the national team for the first time in six games.
KG Canaleta drilled the victory-sealing three from the corner with 53 seconds left for the Llamados, who bounced back from two consecutive losses and improved to 3-4.
In the second game, Mark Cardona and Chamberlain Oguchi spearheaded Meralco’s breakaway in the second period as the Bolts trounced the Powerade Tigers, 111-88, for their second straight win.
The Bolts have now won back-to-back after a 0-4 start while the Tigers absorbed their fifth defeat in seven games.
The 6-foot-10 Douthit rode the bench after spraining his ankle midway in the third period, giving the Llamados enough moving room to dominate the pain and buck the absence of several players on the injury list, including reigning MVP James Yap (calf strain).
The other B-Meg mainstays sidelined by injuries were Jonas Villanueva (ankle), Rico Mierhofer (knee), Don Allado (foot) and Rafi Reavis (hand).
“Douthit’s absence was definitely a big factor. If he’s there, we wouldn’t get many points in the paint,” said B-Meg coach Jorge Gallent.
Without Douthit, the tallest reinforcement in the tournament, the Nationals were routed off the boards, 49-70, and allowed the Llamados 23 second-chance points.
Kerby Raymundo, in his second game after recovering from hip surgery, muscled his way inside to 14 of his 17 points in the second half.
