MANILA, Philippines--Philippine Airlines (PAL) on Tuesday flew in 70,000 bottles of distilled water donated by Asia Brewery, Inc. (ABI) to Tokyo, Japan, signaling the start of PAL's shipment of relief goods for earthquake and tsunami victims.

Weighing 27 tons, the Absolute bottled water were loaded into the cargo hold of PAL's flight PR432 which leaves Manila every afternoon for Narita airport, Tokyo. This is the first tranche of the total 700,000 bottles donated by ABI to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Hubert Tan, ABI VP-Marketing, supervised the cargo loading with PAL Foundation Executive Director Ma. Carmen Sarmiento.

"We are sending drinking water to Japan, in partnership with PAL, to show our solidarity and concern for the victims of the tragedy," said Tan. This, he said, is in compliance with the instruction of his uncle, PAL chairman Dr. Lucio C. Tan, who ordered the immediate shipment of potable water for Japan’s quake victims.

Barazel Salazar, PAL’s country manager in Japan, said he will receive the bottled water on behalf of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government which, in turn, will handle the distribution to calamity-stricken areas in Northern Japan.

Earlier, PAL announced that it is accepting disaster relief supplies for free transport to Japan on space-available basis on any of its regular flights to the calamity-battered nation.

Priority items include medicines, flashlights and heavy-duty pocket knives, water purification tablets, waterproof lightweight tents, sleeping mats and folding camp stoves (but without the LPG or flammable material), compact high-nutrition-value food items; lightweight thermal blankets, windbreakers, sweaters and thick socks in good condition; and others.
