Philippines to China: Explain ship incident

Source: ANN

The Philippines on Friday said it wants an explanation from China after a Filipino ship searching for oil in the South China Sea complained of being harassed by two Chinese patrol boats.

Foreign affairs secretary Albert del Rosario said that Filipino officials are in dialogue with Chinese officials over the incident at the Reed Bank that he says is part of Philippine territory.

"We are asking our Chinese friends (for) an explanation (of) what happened and we are in dialog with them. I would prefer that we leave it at that until I can get back to you with some more information," Del Rosario said in a news briefing in Malaca?ang (presidential palace).

The Philippine military said Wednesday's incident happened at the Reed Bank, which lies between the Philippines' offshore Malampaya gas field and the Spratly archipelago.

"That is our territory. We ascertained that is within our territory," Del Rosario said.
