MANILA—Smart Gilas Pilipinas leaned on a strong start that snowballed the rest of the way into a dominating 109-68 victory over San Miguel Beer yesterday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the FilOil Flying V Arena.
Marcus Douthit powered an early scoring rampage as Smart Gilas dealt San Miguel its worst beating in two decades to stay unbeaten.
The young Nationals extended their unbeaten run to four games with Mark Barroca, Dylan Ababou and Marcio Lassiter also starring in key stretches in Gilas' surprise demolition of another powerhouse squad.
“We worked hard for this, to come in this situation where we can win against PBA teams,” said Gilas coach Rajko Toromon after the Nationals moved closer to clinching a playoff berth.
“Today, it looked easy. But I think the pressure of the game, for San Miguel, didn't let them to play to the level of what they can. But we also played great.”
The 6-foot-11 Douthit, the Philippine team's naturalization candidate, led Gilas' early tear before finishing with 17 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks.
Gilas nailed a total of 16 three-pointers, including four each from Lassiter and Chris Lutz, as the Nationals finished with a notable 50.6 shooting percentage.
San Miguel, which absorbed its third loss in four games, recorded its worst setback in 1998 when Alaska drubbed the Beermen by 38 points, 99-61.
Ababou fired nine of his 17 points from three-point range, while Barroca also had 17 markers and seven assists.
Lassiter 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Lutz rounded out the five Gilas players who finished in double-figures with 14.
By the second period, Gilas doubled the Beermen's output, 38-19, after a run that had Mac Baracael, Barroca and Lassiter drilling consecutive triples.
The onslaught continued as Gilas opened the second half with a 16-4 blitz for a 60-34 spread that incredibly grew to 40 points, 94-54, in the third period.
Gilas also stunned Philippine Cup winner Talk `N Text (103-98) and Fiesta Cup champion Alaska (91-89 in overtime).
Meanwhile, Kerby Raymundo will slip into his B-Meg Derby Ace uniform for the first time in months when the Llamados face the Alaska Aces today in the PBA Commissioner's Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Raymundo skipped the entire Philippine Cup after undergoing hip surgery in the United States, where the B-Meg captain spent his time doing therapy and recovery training with NBA players also sidelined by injuries.
“He (Raymundo) played with injured NBA players during his stay in the States. We'll see if he's in game shape,” said Derby Ace coach Jorge
Gallent.
The Llamados (2-2) are slowly getting into the groove with convincing victories over Barangay Ginebra and Air21 but will be needing Raymundo in tougher times ahead for them to somehow offset the absence of injured players Rico Maierhoffer, Rafi Reavis and Don Allado.
Alaska coach Tim Cone has manpower concerns, too, as the 3-1 Aces seek to maximize their bench and prevent the starters from getting worn out, particularly LA Tenorio.
“We're not playing good basketball down the stretch. We're more fatigued and we need more guys to help us out,” said Cone. “LA is so efficient when fresh. But when he's tired, his efficiency goes down,” he added.
Cone is expecting guard Bonbon Custodio, Mark Borboran, Samigue Eman, Tony Dela Cruz and Don Dulay to provide quality time off the bench.
In the other game, Rain Or Shine puts its unbeaten 3-0 slate on the line when the Elasto Painters clash with the hot-streaking Talk N Text Tropang Texters.
After dropping their conference-opener against the Smart Gilas national team, the Tropang Texters have won three straight capped by a 109-106 win over the Meralco Bolts Friday night.
TNT coach Chot Reyes was pissed off with the way import Paul Harris defended newcomer Chamberlain Oguchi, who scored season-highs of 43 points and eight three-pointers.
The resolve of Elasto Painters will truly be tested on their next two assignments since they are scheduled to face Smart Gilas after the Tropang Texters.
“It's just three games and we haven't proved enough. We have tough games ahead and any one can beat any team at any given night,” said RoS coach Yeng Guiao.
Just like the Aces and the Tropang Texters, the Elasto Painters need two more victories to assure themselves of a spot in the playoffs where the top six teams after the single-round eliminations advance. With reports from June Navarro
