Indonesia lifts tsunami warning after quake off Java

Source: Reuters

Indonesia's earthquake agency on Monday lifted a tsunami warning after a 7.1 magnitude quake struck off Cilacap on the south coast of Java island and caused panic among local residents.

The agency, which said the quake was at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) and about 300 kilometres southwest of Cilacap, could not give any immediate reports of damage.

Agency spokesman Soeharjono said people in Cilacap had panicked after the warning came in the early hours of the morning, and many evacuated to higher ground at the town's main mosque.

Indonesia, on the Pacific "rim of fire" and prone to earthquakes, saw one person killed after eastern province Papua was struck by the tsunami last month that devastated Japan's northeast coast.

State energy firm Pertamina said its 348,000 barrels per day refinery in Cilacap was not damaged by the earthquake and production was running normally. A spokesman said the plant was still battling a fire that broke out on Saturday at storage tanks.
