NKF launches programme to help needy kidney patients

Source: CNA

SINGAPORE: The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) launched its "Grains of Hope" programme, providing S$200,000 worth of basic food necessities to its needy kidney patients yearly.

With the support of Singapore Buddhist Lodge, NKF patients will receive a S$60 food voucher, five kilograms of rice, three kilograms of bee hoon and two litres of cooking oil once in two months.

While Singapore Buddhist Lodge will provide the food items, NKF will take care of distribution.

NKF said the programme fits into its holistic approach of taking care of patients' needs - both medical and nutritional.

Eighty-three per cent of patients under the programme have no income. 148 patients are 60 years old and above with about 42 per cent of these elderly patients having no children to support them.

The new programme is also an enhancement of NKF's previous welfare programme that gave food vouchers.

NKF is still short of volunteers for this programme and those interested can contact NKF directly.

NKF Chairman Gerard Ee said: "Dialysis patients don't have the strength after dialysis to carry a big bag of the rice and cooking oil home, so we actually deliver it to the home."
