All three local telcos will be offering the new iPhone 4S as soon as it lands on our shores. SingTel, StarHub, and M1 has confirmed that Apple's latest gizmo will be available in Singapore on October 28, although pricing and plans are as yet unconfirmed.
The fifth generation of Apple's highly successful smartphone features the same dual-core processor found in the iPad 2, an all-new dual-core graphics chip which promises seven-fold better performance, and a highly-improved 8-megapixel camera.
Making its debut with the iPhone 4S is a new voice-controlled system called Siri. Dubbed an "intelligent assistant", Siri is an advanced voice and speech recognition app which users can talk to just as they would to a real person.
For example, one could say, "Text Ryan I'm on my way" and Siri will know exactly what to do. However, it's unclear whether some of the location-based features -- such as finding nearby Mexican restaurants -- will work outside of the US.
Siri is also context-aware and will draw on information from Wikipedia and Wolfram Alpha to answer your queries. For instance, you could ask Siri "Who is Steve Jobs?" and the answer will pop up on your screen.
If you can't wait until October 28, pre-orders for the new iPhone on Apple's website will start on October 7. Starting at US$199 for the 16GB version to US$399 for 64GB, the phone will also go on sale in retail stores in several countries, including the US, Canada and Japan from October 14.
However, the prices listed are tied with two-year US telco plans. Full retail pricing of the iPhone 4S is unavailable at the time of writing.
