YouTube invests $100 million to compete with traditional television

 
The video mega-website YouTube is expanding its offerings and spending $100 million to bring a variety of professional video content providers, from fitness and sports to politics and entertainment, aboard the service in 2012, reports USA Today.
More companies are jumping aboard the online medium, says R.J. Williams, the founder of YouTube channel Young Hollywood, which creates "snackable" bites of entertainment interviews. Williams predicts everyone will soon migrate online.
In an effort to compete with TV networks, YouTube is seeking to improve production values and hopes to bring in more viewers, especially a younger audience, and sponsors.

Viral videos of cat tricks and double rainbows have been the signature videos on the Google-owned company, but YouTube has redesigned its website to emphasize the focus on channels that can be customized by users.

New YouTube channels include author Deepak Chopra on spirituality and health as well as horror shorts by the creator of the television show CSI, Anthony Zuiker.

Television is being redefined as it becomes available on different devices, from smartphones to tablets, not just on a screen at home. It can be more interactive and social.

A recent survey by Nielsen, the ratings and research firm, finds the average person views a half-hour of online videos a week, and that doubles among 25- to 34-year-olds.

The $100 million investment is a catalyst to make tomorrow's TV viewers, who watch more online, turn to YouTube. The new YouTube channels include:
