POEA set to abolish OEC system -- Baldoz

MANILA -- The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) is set to abolish the overseas employment certificate (OEC) system in a move that seeks to address the "slow processing" problem of overseas Filipino workers, Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said.

Baldoz, who also chairs the POEA governing board, said this means that OFWs may longer apply for new exit clearances whenever they take a vacation in the country.

Baldoz said that during her visit with the OFWs in Cambodia, the issue about the OEC was one of the problems raised.

"Basically one of the things which will be announced (during the event) is the OEC will now become co-terminus with the validity of their contract,” Baldoz said, who is set to announce the new measure during the celebration of the Migrant Workers' Day on June 7.

“This is among the solutions to their (OFW) complaints, to make it more convenient for them to process their exit clearance,” she added.

Aside from synchronizing their OEC with the validity of their contract, the POEA is also set to make the clearance application via Internet.

Baldoz said that the POEA is set to conduct pilot-testing next month for the renewal of their OECs.
