Malaysian couple arrested over maid's murder

A Malaysian couple have been arrested over the death of their Indonesian maid, police said Tuesday, a week after the neighbouring countries signed a deal to curb abuse of domestic helpers.

The couple, in their 50s, were detained Monday and are being investigated for the murder of their maid, who police suspect was abused, an official from central Selangor state said.
Their maid was pronounced dead upon arrival at a hospital just outside the capital Kuala Lumpur Sunday, he said. One of the employers brought her to the hospital.
"We are waiting for the post-mortem results to determine the cause of death. But she had bruises on her body," the police official said.
Local media said the 26-year-old maid had been working with the family since late 2008.
About 170,000 women, mostly from Indonesia, work as maids in Malaysia, according to the Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies.
Jakarta said last week it would lift a two-year freeze on Indonesian maids working in Malaysia after the two countries agreed on better working conditions under a new deal designed to end abuse and torture.
