“The Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the risks of terrorist activity in the Philippines, particularly in the Sulu Archipelago and on the island of Mindanao,” it said in a statement posted on its website.
The advisory said attacks “could be indiscriminate” and might occur in other areas, “to include Manila.”
The U.S. also warned its citizens that terrorists might be targeting places like “airports, shopping malls, conference centers, and other public venues.”
The travel warning particularly noted Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago, as it emphasized ‘sporadic clashes’ between armed groups and the military.
It said U.S. citizens “should exercise extreme caution” and must seek permission before traveling to Mindanao or the Sulu Archipelago.
The U.S. last issued a travel advisory on November 2 last year.
Australia and the United Kingdom also issued a travel advisory that month, noting of imminent attacks in areas frequented by foreigners.
The advisories particularly warn against travel to Mindanao, where supposed allies of international terror group Al Qaeda are present.
