MANILA, Philippines – Search and retrieval operations for missing people in the landslide in Sitio Hangaron, Lumbayao, Valencia City, Bukidnon were terminated Thursday afternoon.
“We are now requesting the Department of Public Works and Highways to stabilize the slopes,” Valencia City Mayor Leandro Jose Catarata said.
Aside from the fact that no additional bodies were recovered since Tuesday, Catarata said there were no reports of missing persons in the area.
“Wala namang nakipag-ugnayan sa amin na naghahanap ng kamag-anak nila,” Catarata told ANC.
The mayor said 3 bodies were retrieved.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the 3 people found dead were Sheryl Sadsad, Segundina Lagunay and Marites Lagunay.
He said the landslide may have been caused by “plate movements.”
He added that the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, an office under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, should be able to determine the cause of the landslide. Catarata also said logging in the area is not prevalent.
“Matagal nang may logging ban sa Bukidnon. Mid-80s pa yata wala ng logging,” he said.
“We have conducted tree planting. However, there are areas that are not accessible to tree-planting activities,” said the mayor.
