SINGAPORE: From August 1, heavy lorries transporting workers on the cargo deck must be fitted with higher railings and canopies, to better enhance the safety of workers.
Lorry owners and employers have been given adequate time, from July last year, to make the necessary adjustments to prepare for this.
But following feedback from employers, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it will not require a doubling of the minimum deck space per seated worker to eight square feet for both light and heavy lorries for the time being.
The authority said it's conducting a further review of this particular measure.
During the review, it will also do a stock-take and assess the effectiveness of the slew of measures already put in place in enhancing the safety and welfare of workers being transported on the cargo deck of lorries.
LTA's group director for Vehicle and Transit Licensing Group, Mr Colin Lim said: "LTA is committed to ensuring the safety of workers transported on lorries. That is why we have implemented various safety measures over the years. For companies and lorry owners who can make the switch to safer modes of transport, we encourage them to do so as soon as they can."
LTA said enforcement action will continue to be stepped up to deter any non-compliance of the regulations.
