8 in 10 S'poreans rely on technology to connect the distance

SINGAPORE: Eight in 10 Singaporeans rely on technology to keep in touch with their loved ones overseas during festive seasons.

This is nearly double the average of those polled in the latest Microsoft poll on 'families and technology" across seven countries in Asia.

Twenty eight per cent of Singaporeans use new communication technologies such as email, instant messaging, social networks and video chat to stay in touch.

While 43 per cent rely on the telephone as a key mode of communication.

The survey also shows that about a third of Singaporean families have more than 10 gadgets such as PCs, tablets, video game consoles, smartphones and cameras.

Together with the Filipinos (36 per cent), they form the largest group in Asia heavily into gadgets.

The research, conducted on MSN, polled more than 3,000 people in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The survey said there was also a surprising lack of any regulation at home across Asia on the use of gadgets.

Only half set rules.

In Singapore, nearly two-thirds of those polled said there are no rules on the use of technology at home, the highest in the region.
