New traveller partnership between S'pore and U.S.

Singapore will become the first country in Southeast Asia to have a Trusted Traveller partnership with the United States.

What this means is that frequent travellers from Singapore to the U.S. will be able to clear airport customs and immigration more quickly.

The White House, in a statement released on Saturday, said that this tie-up would allow pre-screened travellers to use automated kiosks, instead of joining the regular queues, to speed up the clearing of customs and immigration counters.

The U.S. and South Korea will implement this bilateral agreement with a target date of January 2012.

It is not known when this scheme will be implemented here, but the statement said that U.S. President Barack Obama’s officials are working closely with Singapore to expedite the process.
