You don't have to like him, but if you are a true boxing fan that knows the sport in and out, you should respect Floyd Mayweather the fighter. I hear it time and time again (mostly from Pacquiao fans) that Manny would soundly defeat Floyd Mayweather just like he has dominated his previous opponents.
Fans personalize things and they shouldn't do that when analyzing Floyd Mayweather the fighter. Floyd has done things that gives his critics plenty of things to say about him personally, but inside of the ring? come on now.
I'm just as frustrated as the next guy is that the big fight has not happened yet. I want it to happen, and Floyd hasn't really done or said anything that gives much hope that this fight will happen. With that said, IF the two ever did end up facing each other, it would be a very close fight. I find it rather comical that people actually think that Pacquiao would just destroy Floyd Mayweather Jr.
I think sometimes people forget just how good Floyd is. There are a lot of Pacquiao fans that dislike Floyd very much and they have a reason to dislike him. Floyd has said some very distasteful things about Filipinos. The fact that he's not very well liked shouldn't be surprising. With that said, this isn't a debate on the personal life of Floyd Mayweather. We are talking about boxing skills, and boxing talent here.
Defeating the likes of Cotto, De La Hoya, Hatton, Margarito, Morales, Barrera, and Marquez is an express ride into the Hall of Fame. This being said, defeating Floyd Mayweather Jr is no small order, and he would be the most difficult opponent that Pacquiao has ever faced. Even Freddie Roach said this, he knows how difficult the task at hand would be.
If you notice something, it's Floyd's peers that give him the most respect. Again, I'm talking about boxing respect, not personal respect. The fans who dislike Floyd call him every name in the book, and some are even blind enough to think that Floyd isn't a dangerous fighter. If you ask any professional boxer about Floyd's abilities, you will get the true answers.
In Mississippi this debate goes on at almost every boxing or MMA card that I frequent. Last month at the StrikeForce card in Jackson, the topic of Floyd Vs. Manny came up in the dressing room. Anyone who has actually put on the gloves and fought knows how great Floyd Mayweather Jr is as a fighter. When Showtime came to Southaven, MS at the Desoto Civic Center, the topic of Mayweather and Pacquiao was non stop, all night. The writers were talking about it, the fans were, heck everyone was.
Floyd Mayweather Jr love him or hate him can straight up fight. If Manny Pacquiao ever gets into the ring against him, it will be a very difficult hill to climb. Am I saying that Pacquiao would lose? NO, I am not saying that. What I am saying is that if the two do end up fighting, Pacquiao will get a taste of a great fighter who has never lost a fight in his life. On the flip-side, Mayweather would get a dose of Pacquiao, and that my friends is no small order either.
