MANILA, Philippines – British boxer Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton is set to formally announce his retirement, 2years after his devastating 2nd-round knockout loss to Filipino champion Manny Pacquiao.
A report by Manchester Evening News’ website said Hatton will end all speculations after his rumored comeback by announcing his decision on Thursday.
Hatton, a two-time IBF and IBO junior welterweight champion, became inactive in boxing following his stunning defeat at the hands of Pacquiao in May 2009.
The British boxer fell into depression and was later diagnosed with an alcoholism problem.
In September 2010, the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) withdrew Hatton’s license after a newspaper published video footage of him allegedly snorting cocaine.
He eventually committed himself to a rehabilitation facility.
In April 2011, rumors came out that he will have a comeback fight against another former Pacquiao foe, Erik Morales.
The match, however, did not materialize.
