After Manny Pacquiao has dealt with his upcoming fight, scheduled to take place on May 7th at the MGM Grand against Shane Mosley, he could next be fighting in Singapore. Or at least that's what his adviser Micheal Koncz is saying.
The latest report from veteran sports writer Ronnie Nathanielz is that Pacquaio's next fight, penciled in for November at this stage, could well take place in Singapore instead of the usual United States. Full story available here.
Strangely though, the news seems to be coming solely from adviser Michael Koncz, and not from the man who decides where Pacquiao's fights take place, Top Rank boss Bob Arum.
Of course, Pacquiao himself has the final say but tends to listen to Arum's advice when it comes to the arrangements for his fights.
What Arum will make of the idea of a Singapore fight is not known at present, although previous attempts to hold Pacquiao fights in various exotic locales have always fallen flat with the veteran promoter in the past, who sees the inherent problems with holding events in different time zones than the primary market.
The fact of the matter is that holding a fight in Singapore would almost certainly mean that the pay per view numbers would suffer greatly, which is where the majority of the money generated by any big fight comes from.
Singapore is 13 hours ahead of Eastern standard U.S time, and 16 ahead of Western standard U.S time, meaning that to ensure decent pay per view numbers the fight would have to be held early in the morning.
Not a problem in terms of staging the fight, or probably even in attracting a decent live audience to the fight.
However, one of the main reasons that a business group would want to host a Pacquiao fight, which would actually take place in one of Singapore's new casino facilities, is that it would attract high rollers and make a huge amount of money for both the casino and the business group who set the fight up.
This wouldn't happen however if the fight were to take place early in the morning, which it would have to in order that the pay per figures weren't affected.
Simply put, gamblers don't come out to play first thing in the morning and boxing fans in the U.S will only watch fights in sufficient numbers at night.
The amount of money that the Singapore business men would have to fork over in order to assuage the losses from not selling pay per views in any great number in the United States would be astronomical. Conversely holding the fight in the morning in Singapore would lose them the money they stand to make from casino revenue.
That being the case, Pacquiao fighting anywhere else but the United States anytime soon is unlikely. A farewell fight before a home crowd somewhere in the Philippines perhaps in a few years but for pay per view fights, America is really the only viable venue at the moment.
Of course this isn't the first time there as been speculation over Pacquiao possibly fighting elsewhere.
Not so long ago groups from both Abu Dhabi and Qatar were reported to have put in bids for his services, also there was mention of him fighting in Japan at one time and also Macau. At one time even Mexico was mentioned when it was looking as if Antonio Margarito might not be allowed to fight in the U.S.
In the end though, Pacquiao always ended up fighting on U.S soil and the simple reason for that is that the United States is the biggest market for boxing, and therefore the venue that offers the most return for all parties involved.
