Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum said Manny Pacquiao is determined to square off with Floyd Mayweather in court in relation to the defamation suit filed by the Filipino fighter.
Arum told the Bulletin that it will necessitate more than just a public apology for Pacquiao to withdraw the case against Mayweather, his father Floyd Sr. and the boxer’s uncle Roger.
“It’ll require more than that,” Arum said.
A few weeks ago, Pacquiao decided to take off Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) owner Oscar De La Hoya and CEO Richard Schaefer from the same lawsuit after the legendary American fighter made an apology.
Lawyers for Pacquiao, headed by the renowned Daniel Petrocelli, filed the case last year after the Mayweathers and GBP were widely quoted as implying that Pacquiao is using performance-enhancing drugs.
It is believed that the public apology by GBP was accompanied by a monetary settlement, something that persuaded Pacquiao to withdraw the case against De La Hoya and Schaefer.
Last Tuesday, lawyers for Mayweather had filed a request to a Nevada District Court judge to postpone Mayweather’s scheduled deposition this Friday until after the boxer’s Sept. 17 match with Victor Ortiz.
Mayweather’s legal team is asking for a postponement because one of the lawyers won’t be available to guide the fighter during the deposition and that it would distract Mayweather’s focus for the crucial fight with Ortiz.
Arum said Pacquiao’s lawyers are working hard to force Mayweather to go ahead with Friday’s deposition.
Meanwhile, Arum said Pacquiao is scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles on Sunday night in time for a two-day visit to the Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.
After the Nike sojourn, Arum said Pacquiao will try to spend some quality time with wife Jinkee and their four kids.
“(Pacquiao adviser) Michael (Koncz) mentioned about a trip to Montana,” said Arum, who plans to make a formal announcement of the Nov. 12 rubber match between Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez in the first week of August.
In late-August, Pacquiao and Marquez will kick off a seven-city, six-nation and three-continent promotional tour with an appearance in Manila. The next stops will be in Singapore, Abu Dhabi, London, New York, Los Angeles, and Mexico City
